Dia
de los Muertos
(Day of the Dead)
Mark
Vallen 2003
Oil on wood panel 11 x 14
The
Mexican Day of the Dead observance honors deceased ancestors,
and today the occasion is widely celebrated from Mexico to the
Southwest of the United States.
Vallen's
painting was created on a wood panel. He gessoed and sanded the
ground until it had the smooth surface he desired. The next step
was to do an underpainting in brown, some of which you can see
poking through the blue at the top edges. The
underpainting was a complete monochromatic painting before various
colors were introduced. Vallen stuck to a limited palate, using
only a few select browns and blues.
