Vallen created the color pencil portrait of friend Suzy Gardner in 1980 when they both worked in the sleazy Hollywood offices of the L.A. Weekly newspaper. Suzy had this look about her that made her an irresistible subject, like an 80's punk version of Marilyn Monroe gone berserk.
